We made it

Our flight over was an exhausting 17 hours long. We only got a short amount of sleep and were subjected to a horrible in-flight movie not once but twice. My advice, stay away from the movie “Last Shot”.

We arrived at LA about 10am local time (4:00am AEST) and managed to get through LAX customs real easy. We then spent the next two hours trying to find a cheap way to our hotel in Beverly Hills. We managed to find a shuttle service that took us there. On the way we observed how expansive the city is and how generally unattractive it is. Beverly Hills appears to be one of the nicer areas. As soon as we checked in it was straight to bed. Aghhhh…

In the evening we ventured out on foot down Beverly Drive toward Rodeo Drive. It was absolutely beautiful walking along seeing the sun slowly set. We picked up some dinner and supplies before heading home for a full nights sleep.

Today, we took the bus and the metro (subway/tube) up to Universal Studios. Word of Advice: Have exact change for bus trips. It’s taken us some time to break the $100 bills we had but we now finally have some $1 bills and the like for tipping.

Universal Studios is an elaborate version of the Gold Coast’s Movie World. Everything is the same but with a bigger budget. We enjoyed “The Mummy” attraction and the “Van Heisling” haunted house. Michelle and I were frightened a few times by the people who jumped out at us. By mid-afternoon rain had set in. We finished up at Universal Studios and caught the Metro back down to Hollywood. We are now at an internet cafe on the Hollywood Star Walk. This part of town is pretty dodgy really. It kind of looks like Surfer’s Paradise too.

Tomorrow we’re hoping to head out to Disneyland. It all depends on the weather we thinks.

On our way

Today’s the day, we’re finally on our way to the US of A.

Yesterday’s stressful events eventually worked out and I managed to have a few hours to relax last night. However, the excitement (nerves) of the impending trip made sure that I didn’t sleep well. But who cares, there is plenty of time to sleep on the plane. Yay!!

So I’m doing my final round of reading everyones blogs and then decomissioning the computer so I can lend/give it to my baby sister. It’s almost time to wake up Michelle, then finish packing, have some breakfast and start our way to the airport.

Next time you hear from us, we’ll be in a foreign country. Woohoo!!!!

Stress, Stress, Stress

Filed under: At home in Australia| Happenings

After ensuring all our major tasks were completed by yesterday, Michelle and I thought that today would be a non-event in terms of last minute organization. This ended up not being the case.

My computer decided to play silly buggers with me and I ended up spending most of the day out at Ian’s place trying to get all my computer files organized and backed up. This has been a more than stressful event. The worst part hit when I realized that I had deleted (with no chance of recovery) all my music. I also, thought I had deleted all my photos, however as luck would have it I somehow had a backup of them on another disk drive. Pheww!!!

So now I’m in the process of copying the photos on to my hard disk ready to take over to the UK with me. Only another 140 minutes to go.

I’m about to sit down to a beer, fish n’ chips and a new episode of The Simpsons. Time to relax for a moment or two.

This may be my last post for a while, depending on whether I get up early enough tomorrow to post another article. But if I don’t stickfly.com may not have many stories for a while, but please keep coming back. As soon as we get to internet cafe we’ll post updates.

A big thanks to everyone who has helped us out over the last week or so (especially Ian today) and keep in touch everyone.

Time for some time out

Grant and Michelle pulling faces

Pane e Vino dinners have become a bit of a regular thing for me and Ben and my uni friends. It used to be the place for dinner after Friday night drinks – the home of yummy pastas and copius amounts of house wine. Now when we go there, it’s usually to farewell someone overseas (David, Jaimee). And last night it was us!

The gang put together the most awesome leaving present for us – “TimeOut – BAM Edition: Your guide to living and loving in London”. Absolutely hilarious. The best present ever! Every time we read it we discover more things to make us laugh.

Of course no farewell is without some sadness. It might be a while before our next Pane e Vino dinner, but we’ll definitely catch up over webcam, or maybe in the Greek Islands some time.

Apologies to the Pane e Vino diners hoping for a quiet and intimate Valentine’s Day dinner. The house white is just too good to resist.

More farewells

Steel Family Farewell

Joe and MicalieSaturday night Michelle and I headed around to her parents place for a bbq. Her brother and his girlfriend Micalie also joined us. It was an awesome feast with the best porterhouse steak I’ve ever had. I ate too much however and was feeling the effects of that decision the next day.

School Friend Farewell

Angela, Jodie, Michelle, Danielle, Geraldine, Nonie, and Melina
Yesterday, while Michelle finished packing and cleaning her unit, I put in a days work at Ians place. Afterwards, we headed out to the Breakfast Creek Hotel for a school friends farewell. We had a great time and once again enjoyed delicious steak – probably my last for a while.

With both events, the evening drew near and the inevitable farewells occurred. It is really sad to say goodbye to so many wonderful people. The good news however is that we will see everyone again one day :)
