Belief

The music world has since an exponential growth in the number of songs making social comment about the war on terror and the Bush Administration since the attacks on 9/11.

John Mayer

It seems as if every tom, dick and harry in the world of music has written a song or songs expressing their opinions of the war. Popular artists from Pearl Jam, Lenny Kravitz, and Green Day to Eminem and the Dixie Chicks have all written and performed songs expressing their view. Generally they are not in favour of the the methods used to garner public support for the war.

While most artists are explicit about their beliefs and tie it to the current US government and Iraq war, some have tried to get their head around the bigger issue, like John Mayer.

Mayer, has just released a new album, Continuum, which features a song called “Belief”. It is one of the most plain, obvious, statement of truths that has ever been said but I don’t think many people have ever thought about it.

The lyric

“Everyone believes
From emptiness to everything
Everyone believes
And no ones going quietly”

sums up the human condition and while we fight tooth and nail for our beliefs, there will always be conflict.

The song doesn’t offer a solution to human conflict as such (is there ever going to be one?) but does make some relevant points about the effectiveness of preaching and protesting to propogate your beliefs.

I have been thinking along the same line of thought for sometime, so when I heard this song I had a natural affinity to it. I listen to it about 10 times a day. It’s just so darn catchy.

Whether you agree or not with the themes and messages in this song, it’s still worth listening to.

You can listen to the song on his website.

I recommend buying John Mayer’s albums. He is a great performer and I can’t wait to see him in concert again.

Replacing Gadgets

Due to the unfortunate incident of having my bag stolen, I’ve had to start replacing the stolen goods.

8gb Ipod Nano
First on the hit list, was the bag itself. I picked up another Diesel bag in Croatia and it’s even better than the first.

After landing back in London, the first stop had to be McD’s but after that, it was off into town to replace stickfly’s gadget of 2005, my Ipod Nano.

As luck would have it, Apple released their 2nd generation nano range while I was in Croatia. They feature battery life improvements (24 hours now), increased capacity, and a more durable, scratch resistant case.

While there are endless mp3 music players on the market, this one works best for me. I love the ability to sync with iTunes 7 so easily and I love how small it is, as it means I can take it with me all the time and thus I’m never sitting at a tube station or bus stop without something to dance along to.

While I buy many gadgets a year, I have a strange feeling my new black nano is going to win stickfly’s gadget of the year award for the 2nd year running.

Croatia

K: Last week John, Ben, Michelle, Brad, Jackie and I enjoyed a week sailing the Adriatic sea down the Dalmatia coastline.

I should probably explain how this is going to work before there is too much confusion. We have decided to do a collaborative post. That means we are all going to make our comments in this entry and host it on both journals.

So to get the introductions out of the way …

K: Kirsty (In black text)

J: John (In blue text)

B: Ben (In green text)

M: Michelle (In red text)

B: While the entry is highly amusing and informative, I understand that some of you may not be bothered to read it in its entirety so we’ve also included a little 3 minute movie for you to enjoy if you prefer to get an entertaining snapshot of our most glorious week.

M: Be sure to click the “Continue reading Croatia…” link underneath the video to read all about our adventures.

Recurring Dreams

The last 8 years or so I’ve had a recurring dream that scares the hell out of me everytime.

Dreaming Man

It goes a little something like this:

I’m at the end of my final year of high school. I’ve completed 3 of my final 6 exams and seemed to have done fairly well with them. However, my English, Physics and Maths exams have yet to come. Here’s where the scary bit comes in. a) I don’t know when they are scheduled. b) I haven’t attended a class for the last 6 months as I have been guilty skipping and c) I don’t have any of the text books to do some independent learning.

For those who know me, I can’t handle the possibility of taking an exam without a lot of studying. So this kind of dream scares the hell out of me.

There is good to come out of it though, I do get a tremendous sense of relief when I wake up and realize that it is just a dream. I liken the feeling to when you are busting to do a pee for a couple of hours and finally find a toilet to relieve yourself.

Anyways, this recurring dream got me thinking. What does it mean? Why do I have it? Can I stop it?

Do you have any recurring dreams? I’d love to hear about them and what you might think they mean.

We’re back

Don’t worry everyone, we’re back! We had the most fantastic time away in Croatia. One of my all time top three holidays.

A collabrative review of our trip will be forthcoming soon but the pressures of post-holiday chores are taking their toll on our spare time.

Since arriving back yesterday, we’ve managed to get out and catch up with our great mates Tony and Jen who have just arrived in town as the start of a 7 week adventure through Europe. Taking jetlagged Jen – “my eyes feel like sandpaper” – and Tony out into the center of London might not have been the best idea but it was good to see the expression on their eyes as Big Ben struck midnight. There’s definitely a wonder about being in this city.

This afternoon we celebrated Jaimee’s birthday down by the Thames river near the Tate Modern art gallery.

A pretty good weekend really.
