Think of the worst thing that could happen to you and give that a rating of 100% on the “my life is crap scale”. Now reduce that horrible thing down by a factor of 10 and you get what happened to me last night.

While out catching up with our friends Joel and Janelle who have been cycling through Europe for the last 6 months I had the misfortune of having my bag stolen.

In this bag, I had my new camera, my phone, my ipod, a usb memory stick with all my important files, and the latest novel I’ve been reading.

I can hear what your thinking right now… ‘man that sux’.

Well it get’s worse!

There was one other item in there that I kind of need for a variety of reasons.

My passport

Yep… my passport.

I’m not legally allowed to stay in the country without a visa and I’m meant to be travelling to Croatia next weekend for a holiday.

So I’ve got a fun few days trying to figure out how to get an emergency passport.

I think I’m going to have to get the locks replaced at our house too because my house keys were in the bag along with information pertaining to our address.

The good news is, that this is all just a big inconvenience, and nothing to really complain about as we still have a health, our lives, and our loves.

  1. Ahh man that really does sux. It sounds like you still had your wallet on you at least though which is something. Hope that it’s not going to be hugely painful to get replacements (and insurance?) :(

  2. Oh my God – this is NOT supposed to happen. Remember when you ran past me in the Botanic Gardens and pinched my bag – it does give one a very horrible feeling!!!
You just HAVE to get a replacement passport to go to Croatia.

  3. If only our contents insurance policy covered items stolen outside the house …

i tell you that insurance is the biggest scam in history.

  4. Ditto for me, strange thing is that you can’t stay in the country without a visa, but can’t leave without a passport. That’s a real catch 22 if you ever had one.

    Good Luck!!

  5. Dude, that bites. I hope things work out in the end though.

On the upside, someone sold me an IPod, really nice 10 MP camera and threw a handy memory stick in on the deal just the other day. He said he would mail me the warranty cards as soon as he got a hold of them :)

  6. Thankyou to everyone for their well wishes (minus Andrew ;)

It’s a big process going through replacing everything. I’ve got a new phone handset coming tomorrow (thankyou orange) and will be taking a day off work to try and get a new passport.

I’ve replaced the locks on our house and changed all my account passwords around the interweb and on our personal computer.

    the joys of it all!

ps> j – i can’t wait to go gadget shopping but the $5000 aud loss has kind of incapacitated the gadget budget so I might have to bring out the credit cards :)

  7. OK dude – little story to make you feel 1% better – Emma had the same situation, except her purse was in the bag (along with Oyster Card with 1 month’s credit on it) PLUS she was in Brussels when her bag was stolen (so her bag also had her return ticket to London in it too) – can you imagine how scary it was for her to think that she might be stranded in Brussels with zero money while the Aust consulate gave her an emergency passport?! Luckily she was able to get back into this country and go through the steps of getting all of her worldly possessions back.

Bad news is that you not only have to get a passport but you have to get your Visa reinstated as well – I suggest you chat to Emma about this, since she has just gone through the BS. (I can give you her deets)

  8. hey laura-london!

I’m so glad that I managed to not have my wallet in the bag and that I am in London with a weeks worth of time to try and get it all sorted. I can definitely imagine the stress it would have caused while being o/s.

That’d be great if you could send me em’s details. I’ve managed to get my passport application in yesterday… now I have to do the visa :/

  9. Dude! That’s not good. I don’t know if I have ever lost anything to that value before. There was this one time where I thought that I had lost my wallet, but low and behold it was actually in my hand. Doh!
