Children of Men

Last night Michelle and I took advantage of our time alone together this weekend by snuggling up next to each other for a date at the cinema.

Going to the movies is a treat for Michelle as she loves to spend a few minutes before the presentation by handpicking a tasty selection of “pick n mix” lollies from the candy bar. Arms full of assorted goodies, we settled in for our feature film of choice, Children of Men.

The movie is set in 2027, 18 years after flu pandemic renders all women infertile and no children being born since. An interesting premise that allows the the director to present a convincing, possible future should such an event affect human kind.

The film is set in London and South England and stars Clive Owen, Michael Caine and Julianne Moore. It was great seeing all the recognizable sites of London and the special effects used, while subtle are superb, especially the live birth scene.

An excellent film that highlights the selfishness of humankind and how children are not only essential to our future but to our existence on a daily basis.

Look at moieeeee

I’ve been known to spend way too long in front of the mirror making sure I look as good as possible before heading out to a party. But never to make sure I look at ludicrous as possible as I did Saturday night. With good reason though – it was a Kath & Kim party!

Gabby and Kerrie - the hosts

Lucky for us the party was within walking distance so we didn’t have to brave the tube – particularly for Ben as Kel in his super-tight, super-short shorts, body-hugging ,sweaty singlet, slicked-down hair and white sneakers. Noice.

B: Yes, I think I will do an auction or competition for some of these hot ticket items. I can see everyone scrambling for my super-tight shorts and sweaty headband.

One of my book club mates, Kerrie, is leaving London to spend some time in Marrakech. So what better theme for a party than ‘Kath & Kim do Morocco’?!

All of the usual suspects were there: Kaths, Kims and Kels, and an appearance from Sharon – complete with pash rash. The highlight for me was Pruuuu, who not only looked the part, but remained in character all night. Impressive.

As you can imagine, the handful of South Africans, Canadians and English at the party were a little bewildered.

Ice Ball

It’s not often that I get freebies through my work, so when I was offered two tickets to last night’s Ice Ball, I snapped them up. It was a great opportunity for Ben and me to get dressed up, enjoy some fine food and entertainment, and support a really worthwhile charity, Help a London Child.

The venue was an old converted brewery, named, funnily enough, The Brewery.

There were apparently loads of ‘celebrities’ there (think Big Brother contestants and radio DJs), but they must have been D-list at best, as Ben and I didn’t recognise any of them!

A day at Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf is a thriving financial metropolis in East London, that rivals London’s tradition financial district (the square mile).

Everyday thousands of workers commute in from all over the country to work for one of the many large financial corporations that have offices here.

Unlike the rest of London, Canary Wharf is relatively modern and looks like a clean, miniature version of NY city.

Lunchtimes are always exciting as the masses stomp through the underground mall, lining up for their midday feed.

I’ve created a small, quick video of a typical day in Canary Wharf for me.

Wesesses Birthday

Tuesday we celebrated Wes’s birthday down at this super cool funky bar in Clapham called barlocal.

We met some of Wes and Stackers’ friends and enjoyed some exceptional burgers and beers all while being looked after by some of the most impressive service staff I’ve ever experienced.

Apart from being super friendly and attentive, when they took my credit card to pay our bill the guy says back my name and for the first time ever in my life, he pronounced my surname correctly. I was stoked.
