Failure to Launch

Last night, after a stressful week of work Michelle and I decided to kick back at home, enjoy a good meal and order a video-on-demand movie on TV. We’d seen most of the movies that were available but came across “Failure to Launch” starring Jess Parker and Matt McConaughey.

Let’s just say that the movie is aptly named. I wasn’t expecting much from this film so for that reason I wasn’t too disappointed. There is nothing original in this re-hashed romantic plot line, and its terrible attempts at inserting irrelevant scenes for the sake of securing a laugh just misfire.

If you ask me this is truly one of the worst romantic films I’ve ever seen – that said everyone knows my favourite romantic movie is Terminator 2 ;)

Seriously though, avoid this movie unless you are a film student being instructed to watch it solely for the purpose of learning how not to make film or a business student learning how to quickly produce a terrible product that will run a profit.

What a productive Sunday!

We finally managed to secure a rental contract for our new home on the weekend. As such, we will be moving in three weeks, just a little down the road to a nicer 1 bedroom apartment. I decided that instead of waiting until moving day to pack up our guff, I’d dig right in and get as much of it done as I could yesterday.

I managed to pull everything down from the attic, gather together a bag of clothes and old shoes for the charity shops, pack away a whole heap of electrical equipment, books and other stuff as well as find the time to give Michelle a hug or two along the way.

As I was packing Michelle was doing some wonderful administration work. She was going through all our utility providers and figuring out how to cancel/transfer all our bills. As I was going through our stuff, we managed to find a few items that we no longer required, so thought we would put them up on gumtree.com and sell them for a few bob.

Our phone has been ringing non-stop since putting the items up. We managed to sell 3 of the 6 items in the first day. Gotta love gumtree.

Uno gang

Our good friends from Aus, Tony and Jen have been traveling through Europe on a 7 week monster vacation. They’ve been absolutely everywhere from Croatia to Germany, Switzerland to Czech, but the fun always has to end somewhere, and so for the last few days they finished up their holiday in London by staying with us.

The Uno Gang

On Friday night we all headed down to Clapham Common for a Guy Fawkes day fireworks display. At first I compared the fireworks to my experiences of the Brisbane Riverfire event and so I was initially dissapointed (like where was the F1-11 afterburn) but after a few minutes I realized I was seeing a whole new range of fireworks that I’ve never seen before and was suitably impressed.

The next day we slept in and just hung about before we met up with Jaimee, Damian and David again for a Sunday afternoon pub lunch at the Old Ship in Chiswick.

After that, it was time for sad goodbyes :(

Tube delays!

Sardine CanCatching a tube in the morning is often an unpleasant experience as one reason or another causes minor to severe delays. Of late, I’ve frequently let 2 to 4 trains go by because there wasn’t enough room to get on.

When these delays occur, passenger numbers at the station increase by the minute resulting in a huge influx of people wanting to board the next train. As passengers try to cram on, personal space decreases and tempers begin to rise. Don’t ask me how many dirty looks and under-breath mutterings I’ve encountered in the last week.

I find it shameful that some on-board passengers choose to express their discomfort by aiming negativity towards other passengers. Why should they be the only one allowed on this particular train? Yes, it’s uncomfortable and we all don’t like having our face buried in someone else’s armpit but everyone has a right to get where they are trying to go. Not just them!

We can’t blame the London Underground for every delay but we can stop being annoyed at our fellow passengers and lobby together to attack the problem that actually causes the majority of these delays. Let’s harness the negative feelings and campaign against the London Underground as they are running a profitable business off our custom, but are too stingy or incompetent to build redundant, fail-safe, systems to avoid the many frequent signal failures.
