Lisboa, Portugal

Furnished with a new visa, Spech and I thought it was high time we outtered here and took off for some winter sunshine. Of course there were the obvious places to go – Melbourne, Scotland, Wales – but we decided to be adventurous and risk our chances with Lisbon, Portugal.

Elevator

Only 1500 km or so from London, we were quickly landing Friday night in the most deserted capital city I’ve even been to.

Walking the streets the next morning was glorious. The sky was picture perfect without a single cloud to be seen anywhere. Within minutes we were walking the main city centre, and enjoying the sites. It wasn’t long however until we were enticed by the cheap shopping opportunities (Saldos). Michelle and I scooped up some real bargains. I’m just glad I have more than 2 t-shirts in my wardrobe again :)

Motorbike Chelle

I found Lisbon to be a clean, pretty, and friendly city but was astounded at how few people were around, seeing as it’s the capital of Portugal. It also appears to be a slightly poorer city, with many beggars, homeless and buskers and I can’t count how many times I was approached asking if I wanted some hash or coke. I just told them that I already had my hash browns and coca cola at McD’s for breakfast.

The River

Saturday night, Chelle’s and I enjoyed a super fantastic evening together. It’s always good to go on a date with your loved one, especially when it involves some great seafood. We always seem to have the most fun when we’re away together.

Saturdays brightness faded into Sundays gloom however. It was super cold, grey and rainy when we decided to check out the area of Sintra, about 30 min north of Lisbon. Sintra is a beautiful district with many historical castles, palaces and pretty gardens, but the magic of these places is lost when you are freezing and wet. It’d be good to head back here again another time, when the sun is shining. It offers a lot of promise.

Fantasy Castle

London winters have this way of holding us close by the leash and keeping us from exploring. It kind of puts us in a hibernating state, where we tend to spend more evenings at the pub with friends then we do out and about, so it was really good to get back out there for 2007 and start the year off by exploring a new town and a new country.

Snow!

View outside our windowWe’ve been in London for 2 years now and have only managed to catch a glimmer of it snowing but yesterday we awoke to find the streets, cars and houses covered with a fresh blanket of snow.

Getting up at 6am in the middle of winter to walk to the gym in your shorts is never a fun prospect but yesterday, seeing the snow on all the cars and having to fight to stand up straight and not slip over as I walked to the bus stop, made it all ok.

While I’m sure the traveler types really enjoyed the snow, I can tell you now that most Londoners I know thought it was a pain in the ass. Mainly because it absolutely kills the public transport system, making everyone late for work. I don’t know why that’s a bad thing. Who wants to get to work early anyways :/

5 things you don’t know about me

My turn!

  • I was the state Domino’s pizza-making champion when I was 16 (in a team of 3). Now I’m just a champion at pizza eating.
  • I love reading trashy romance novels. Sure I’m a devoted book club member and read a few books, but it’s the Jilly Coopers and Penny Vincencis of the world that really keep me enthralled.
  • Ben reckons I’m very good at mimicking people. I’m not sure about that, but I do know I can’t help myself and probably imitate someone at least once a day. The English and their various accents and sayings provide me with lots of entertainment.
  • I have an annoying skin condition on my face which makes my cheeks rosy and means I’m particularly susceptible to heat and sun. It guess it’s one plus for living in the land of the long white cloud!
  • I have a very long tongue. And no, I won’t show you it :)

5 things you don’t know about me

The kua tagged me with the challenge of blogging 5 things about myself that you may not know about me.

Here goes:-

  • I’ve recently become a pescatarian or vegaquarium. It has been a wonderful change for me, helping me to plan my meals and ensure I eat nutritiously.
  • In my youth I had many crazy haircuts, the most outrageous being an undercut where the the short section was cut with a razor blade by my 10 year old sister. Let’s just say I had a half skin head that had blood oozing out of it for a while :)
  • I had my first pash when I was 13. It was a friends xmas party and we played spin the bottle. I had had a crush on the girl for the entire year and it was the best xmas present i got that year.
  • I used to race BMX every weekend for about 6 years, entering the Queensland titles about 4 times, and the best I ever achieved was making it to the finals.
  • I’m a college dropout, well sorta, I started a double degree in Electronics Engineering and I.T but found the workload and contact hours to stressful and dropped the Electrical Engineering degree. My transcript is permanently marked with 4 subjects that I never completed :(

Be a sport, and take up the challenge on your own blog!
