Leaving SA, heading to China

Filed under: Adventuring Overseas| Travel & Holidays | Tagged: |

Today is our last day in South Africa. We’re currently at the beginning of at least a 35 hour stretch of commuting:

  • 5 hour drive from Kruger to Jo’berg airport
  • 12 hour flight from Jo’berg to London Heathrow airport
  • 7 hour wait at Heathrow airport
  • 11 hour flight from Heathrow to Shanghai airport

While the commuting will be painful the rewards will be worth it.

We’re doing a 2 week organized tour through China and I’m not sure what our chances of updating the blog are going to be like during this time.

In the meantime, we wish everyone the most magical of Easter holidays and that people enjoy spending time away from work and with friends and family.

Leading the news

Yesterday as we were driving through Kruger Park we heard on the radio news that renewed calls have been made to have mandatory jail sentencing imposed for those who ignore Zimbabwe’s price control laws.

It seems as if there are vendors out there charging 9 million dollars for a loaf of bread instead of the government imposed limit of 6 million dollars.

Yikes! If you ask me every vendor should be going to jail for charging those prices.

For those interested, 1 US dollar is worth about 25 million Zimbabwe dollars.

Jo’berg to Kruger

We finished up in Cape Town and flew up to Jo’berg to then drive across to Kruger National Park.

Somewhere in Cape Town though, I managed to get a seemingly endless runny bum that has seen me lose a few kilos (every storm has its rainbow). This has been a bit of a pain having to find rest stops every hour or so while out and about.

In my diarrhea induced stupor I managed to leave our camera charger and spare battery back in Cape Town. So we’ve had to become very economical with our photo taking – as we can’t seem to find a place to buy a replacement charger over here and the dudes at our CT accommodation haven’t been very well, accommodating.

Meanwhile, Jo’berg has the worlds suckiest traffic congestion – and that’s just us trying to head out from the airport.

I’ll stop ranting now. We are having the best fun still. When we get time and a proper internet terminal I’ll write up some stories and post some photies of all the wonderful animals we’ve seen.

Table Mountain

Waking up to our second day in Cape Town we were greeted with slightly crappy weather. This presented problems with out current plan of heading up to Table Mountain on the cable car as we didn’t want our view to be ruined by the low hanging clound referred to as the Table Cloth.

So we headed out to Rhodes Memorial for a coffee and scone, before driving into the city bowl to visit the District Six Museum. This museum documents the forced removal of the blacks and coloureds from their homes in the inner city as the land was reclaimed for the whites.

Afterwards, we headed to the Waterfront – which is basically a shopping mall on the waterfront with lots of restaurants and such. It has a real nice feel to it even though it might be considered a little touristy. After a few hours browsing the weather cleared up so we raced our way up to Table Mountain.

OMG! The most stunning view of Cape Town presents itself up here. A definite must do as words and photographs will never describe it.

Our Cape Town accommodation

We’ve been very fortunate with all our accommodation in SA to date. Well, except for the dodgy hostel spoken about previously.

However, I think our apartment in Cape Town is just the best. Overlooking Camps Bay beach we get to see the sunset over the ocean and the clouds rolling in over Table Mountain all through an extremely large glass panelled wall in our bedroom.
