Ghost Town

Last night I saw Ricky Gervais’ latest movie – Ghost Town.

The film revolves around Dr. Bertram Pincus – Ricky Gervais – a dentist, scorned by love and now lives each day as a miserable self-absorbed nutter. After temporarily dying on the operating table for 7 minutes during a routine colonoscopy, Pincus discovers that he can see dead people.

Hilarity ensues as New York’s ghosts badger Pincus to mediate unfinished business between them and their living loved ones. One ghost, Frank – Greg Kinnear – is particularly persistent and the plot follows a 3 way relationship between Frank, Pincus and Frank’s living wife Gwen – Tea Leoni.

Gervais has perfect comedic timing and Kinnear and Leoni both really shine giving this film more meat and less gush than most romantic comedies.

Weekend Wrap Up

Guess what?

We bought a new car. That’s right. No more two door manual girly car for this hip happening couple. We’ve entered the big league and have ourselves a 4 door sports automatic Subaru Liberty sedan.

We picked it up on Friday night. Just in time to take it up the coast for the weekend to celebrate my little nephew’s 3rd birthday on Valentines day.

Michelle and I booked a room up at Surf Air at Marcoola for the two nights and had a wonderful time relaxing, lunching with the family for Jetty’s bday and celebrating Valentines day.

Michelle and I are both hopeless romantics but when I say hopeless I mean it in the literal sense. We don’t bother with V.Day usually and so had not anticipated the possibility of not finding somewhere to eat on Saturday night. Absolutely everywhere was booked out. We drove around for ages. I’d stop outside a restaurant, Michelle would go in and ask if there was any chance and she’d walk away from them while they laughed at us.

Eventually we tired of all the driving, stopping and asking and settled on a stop in at an old favourite that didn’t take reservations – Sizzler.

OMG!

It was like a re-union of last years Biggest Loser contestants. Too many people out of control – me included.

I can never, ever go there again.

After such a lazy, decadent weekend I was straight back at the gym this morning pumping iron. Now to get ready to ride to work on the peddly.

Friday night we popped over to Oliver’s to eat pizza and watch a DVD – The Darjeeling Limited starring Adrian Brody and Owen Wilson – a movie that I can safely say is not for everyone.

Yesterday we went to a midday housewarming over in my old hood of Brackers to celebrate our old neighbours’ moving into their first home.

Today we had a picnic with some goannas up at Mt. Mee State Forest, before sitting back to watch The Biggest Loser while eating some fish n chips.

Commuting

This morning, for the first time in almost 9 months I had to catch a train to work.

To most people this isn’t a big deal but for me – having lived London’s tube system for over 3 years – this is a big deal.

The fact that I’ve managed to go over 9 months without public transporting to work says a few things about BrisVegas to me.

  • Congestion isn’t too much of a problem that I’m penalised for driving into the city (e.g. congestion charge, prohibitive parking costs).
  • Public Transport isn’t convenient enough for me to take that option over driving/riding.

After today’s experience, I’m so thankful that I can still find my own way in to work.

I had to let two trains pass as they were jammed full of people and I couldn’t get on. When I did finally make it on to the 3rd train to stop at Zillmere I then endured a mind numbing 20 minute ride into town with a whole host of annoying people oblivious that other passengers were privy to the mind-numbing and often embarrassing conversations.

As much as I was weirded out in London by the fact that no one ever talked on the tube I’ll take silence anyday over having to hear about “how many guys someone snogged on the weekend”.
