Weekend Wrap Up

While this week saw the spontaneous ousting of our Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, more important business was afoot at the Priebe household.

It was our first weekend for a while where we didn’t have to attend baby school. So to celebrate we scootered down to Top Nosh for some scones and coffee and some BaM time. However as the sun passed the midday mark it was time for us to tackle the second half of the wardrobe construction in the baby’s room. Pieter – a true legend and gentleman – came over to offer another four hours of his time and by 5:30pm it was finally finished. That total construction time was eight hours for two people. Eight hours for an Ikea piece of furniture. Never again.

When we tidy up the room I’ll take post some pictures.

In the evening we GPS’d our way out to the bushlands of Bunya to spend a wonderful evening dining with the Johnsen’s. Cathy and Amelie prepared a three course meal, with each course outdoing the previous.

After a late night out – we arrived home at midnight – we slept until nine am before hurriedly getting ready to meet our friends David and Suzy and their little girl Eliza at Buzz @ Emporium for brunch. They live on the wrong side of town so our bi-annual catchup with them is always special.

After brunch it was off to go see the Ron Mueck exhibition at Brisbane’s GOMA.

This artist has true talent and his lifelike sculptures of the human form will blow your mind. If you’re in Brisbane before it closes in early August you must go see it.

After a quick nap and a peanut butter sanger we hit the baby room one last time and managed to get it all completed. A great feeling.

Sometimes I get so overwhelmed with completing tasks that I perceive to be necessary that my brain synapses short-circuit. The result – I shut down and get very little done.

When the brain reboots it realizes that the tasks haven’t been completed and the cycle continues. It’s my own personal “blue screen of death”. I’m feeling very overwhelmed at the moment with work, and with preparing for life after baby that I often retreat to the couch for some TV therapy. Occasionally however, I get off the couch and become productive.

Last weekend, we completed our final antenatal class. It was much more positive than the second class and I got to see lots of boobies learn breast feeding techniques. In the afternoon, Michelle and I, along with my mate Pieter tackled the baby’s bedroom. Michelle put together the feeding chair, change table and cot while Pieter and I attacked the massive wardrobe. After 4 hours we had only managed to get half of the wardrobe done. This means we have yet another day to spend on it this weekend :(

Thankfully Sunday was a rest from baby stuff and I got to spend a good portion of the day at work. You ripper! That said, I did manag to catch an afternoon remedial massage and have a cup of joe with the old lady (my mum) before getting a last minute invite to go see “Sex and the City 2” at the Blue room in Rosalie with Louisa et al.

Weekend Wrap Up

Australia “celebrated” the Queen’s birthday with a public holiday last weekend. With three days off most people get to thinking and plan one of two options for their extended weekend:

1. Take a mini-break and enjoy some R&R.
2. Knuckle down and finish off some chores from the backlog.

We decided to go option two with a sprinkle of option 1.

This weekend was all about baby prep. We kicked off Saturday by attending our second ante-natal class. Unlike the first week where we came out of the class feeling positive and uplifted this week brought down the hammer and drove home what we have got ourselves into. I’m starting to feel the realness of it all now.

Afterwards, Michelle went to the races to celebrate our friend Jodie’s birthday while I went and caught a showing of Robin Hood at the cinema. It was ok but nothing earth shattering.

Sunday was all about room preparation. After a trip to Bunnings, Michelle’s folks came over over and together we disassembled the spare room and moved furniture downstairs readying the room for this weekend’s construction efforts. I’ve enlisted the help of a mate to put together a cot, change table, feeding chair and a massive wardrobe. We’ve been having difficulty getting delivery on all the goods but hope to have them all ready for Saturday.

In the afternoon I managed to get some chores done (e.g. car wash, catch up on work reading, etc.) before I set off on my treasure hunt to find the geocache item that Gerrod and Kristy sent on its journey.

In the evening Michelle and I went out for some Italian and then went and saw The A-Team at Chermside. The movie was what you’d expect except the director must be hard of hearing because 20 percent of the scenes were unintelligible. People speaking over the top of each other, lots of mumbling, sound effects that overpowered the speech. It was a mess. That and the choppy, out-of-sequence, all-over-the-place, quick-bite, extreme-close-up cinematography in the action scenes made this film less enjoyable. My tip to the director – step back a few metres when filming your scenes.

Monday we went around to the Dahl’s for brekky and to watch Australia’s dismal first world cup game. 4-0 loss to Germany. Disgraceful.

In the afternoon we went off to Ikea to purchase some of the baby goods. There’s no need to describe my Ikea experience as you’ve all had them. Shocking.

I remember thinking that I didn’t get that much done this weekend but when I look back over what I just wrote here I see I achieved a fair amount.
